We recently received this message from Bob of Weson-Super-Mare. We enjoyed reading it so much we wanted to share it with you.
“I am currently living in Weston-Super-Mare.
As a child I always spent my holidays with my Uncle & Aunt who ran the Ferry boat across from (The Heron Inn) Malpas, near Truro across the River Fal to the Ferryman’s Cottage.
In 1959 water was drawn from a well, for washing, a manual hand pump on the side of the house was the means by which water was sent aloft to a tank. A battery system of lighting was defunct so it was back to candles and one Tilley light. In the morning we rowed across to Malpas for the milk and a newspaper.
Memories of an early morning on the river, oyster beds, fresh fish, a heron by the water’s edge, my Aunt’s cream teas with which she supplemented her pension, and her homemade Cornish pasties are still vivid.
Strangely the Cornish Pasty was the miner’s meal and I am now semi-retired from a career which encompassed travelling over 30 countries and served the mining industry.
To sum it all up your Pasties are the nearest thing to those my Aunt made.”
Many Thanks
Bob
